Ring Ten — The Reading

02036

The person you promised is reading this.

There is no story this year. You are the story now.

If you are here in September 02036, then somewhere behind you is a night in a desert — a stranger, a book, a page written by headlamp before sleep. This month, the first burn on a San Francisco beach turns fifty years old. Your book has spanned the fortieth fire to the fiftieth. That was always the design, though nobody printed it.

Go back to the center of the book. Read the page you wrote that night — the memory you mailed forward. Then read your nine rings, in order, one year at a time. Thin ones and all. You are holding the only copy of this book with you in it.

Then the last choice, exactly as the book says: fire, or hands. If fire — a fire that matters, with your pages read once out loud. If hands — a stranger, a real conversation, and the next empty line of the Lineage Page. Leave every word you wrote. The next keeper does not receive a blank book. They receive evidence of a life.

There are only so many copies of this book. There is no limit to the number of times it can be given.

Thank you for keeping a ten-year promise made to a stranger in the dark. The light stays on.

Say the sentence back. Out loud. You are the only one who can.

This page will never ask you for anything.
No account. No list. It only gives.
